Eyelash extensions: classic, volume and how to make them last

How classic, volume and hybrid lash extensions differ, how long an appointment takes, and how to keep them full until your next refill.

Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic lashes bonded one by one to your natural lashes, so your eyes look fuller and more defined without mascara. They suit anyone who wants to skip daily eye make-up, spends a lot of time in the water or on the road, or has short or sparse lashes. Most people go back for a refill every two to three weeks.

At a glance

  • Time: usually 1.5–2.5 hours for a full set; 45–75 minutes for a refill.
  • Results usually last: extensions shed along with your natural lashes, so most people refill after 2–3 weeks.
  • Suits: low-maintenance everyday wear, brides, swimmers and gym-goers, travellers who want to look awake on beach days.
  • Think twice if: your eyes are red, sore or infected; you have reacted to lash glue before; you have had recent eye surgery; your natural lashes are very weak or falling out; you are pregnant or have an eye or skin condition — check with your doctor first.

Classic, volume or hybrid?

  • Classic (1:1): one extension on each natural lash. The result looks like a good coat of mascara, and it is a safe choice for a first set.
  • Volume: the technician makes a small fan of very fine lashes (often called 2D, 3D, 4D and so on) and attaches it to a single natural lash. Fuller, softer and more dramatic.
  • Hybrid: a mix of classic and volume, somewhere between natural and full.

You will also choose the curl (usually labelled J, B, C or D), the length and the overall shape, such as cat-eye or doll-eye. Extensions that are too long or heavy for your own lashes put strain on them, so a good technician will steer you towards a length your lashes can comfortably carry.

What happens at the salon

  1. Consultation: the technician looks at your natural lashes and asks about the look you want, previous sets and any allergies.
  2. Cleansing: lashes are cleaned of oil and make-up so the adhesive bonds properly.
  3. Taping: a gel pad or tape covers your lower lashes.
  4. Application: you lie back with your eyes closed the whole time while each extension or fan is attached just above the skin, never touching it.
  5. Finish: the lashes are brushed through and separated, then you open your eyes slowly and check the mirror.

Plenty of people fall asleep. If your eyes sting or start to water, say so straight away so the technician can pause.

Before your appointment

  • Arrive with clean eyes: no mascara, eyeliner or eye cream.
  • Take out contact lenses or bring your case.
  • If you have a lash lift, wait until it has relaxed before getting extensions.
  • If you have sensitive skin or this is your first set, ask about a patch test with the adhesive a few days beforehand.
  • Bring a photo of the look you like. In Vietnam this also helps a lot if you and the technician don't share a language.

Aftercare

  • Keep lashes dry and avoid steam, saunas, hot showers and swimming for the first 24–48 hours (ask what your salon recommends for its adhesive).
  • Don't rub, pull or pick at your lashes.
  • Use an oil-free cleanser and make-up remover around the eyes.
  • Brush your lashes daily with a clean spoolie.
  • Try not to sleep face-down.
  • Never pull extensions off yourself; have them removed at the salon with a proper remover.

Visitor tip: if you are planning beach days in Da Nang, Nha Trang or Hoi An, book your lashes at least a day or two before your first swim.

Questions to ask the salon

  • Which adhesive do you use, and can I have a patch test?
  • Can I see photos of this style done by the technician who will do mine?
  • When should I come back for a refill, and how is a refill priced compared with a full set?
  • How do you clean and sanitise your tools between clients?

FAQ

How long do eyelash extensions last?

They fall out with your natural lashes as those shed. Most people refill after 2–3 weeks; without refills, most extensions are usually gone within 4–6 weeks.

Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?

Applied correctly at a sensible length and weight, they usually don't cause lasting harm. Problems are more likely with overly heavy sets, frequent rubbing, or pulling extensions off at home.

What's the difference between classic and volume lashes?

Classic places one extension on each natural lash for a natural look. Volume places a fan of several fine extensions on each lash for a fuller effect.

How much do eyelash extensions cost in Da Nang?

Prices depend on the salon, the style and how full you go. See current prices at salons on Chepom Bookings: Da Nang · Hoi An · Ho Chi Minh City

Can I swim with eyelash extensions?

Yes, once the first 24–48 hours have passed. Salt water, chlorine and rubbing can shorten their life, so rinse gently with clean water and brush them through afterwards.
