Facials: what happens, how often to go and aftercare
What happens during a spa facial, how often to book one, and how to look after your skin afterwards in Vietnam's sun and humidity.
A facial is a spa treatment that deep-cleans, exfoliates and hydrates your skin, usually with a relaxing face, neck and shoulder massage. It suits most people who want clearer, softer, fresher-looking skin, especially when heat, sweat, sunscreen and city dust leave pores congested. A spa facial is a beauty treatment, not a replacement for seeing a dermatologist.
At a glance
- Time: usually 60–90 minutes.
- Results usually last: skin looks brighter straight away and the effect typically lasts a few days; many people book every 4–6 weeks.
- Suits: oily, combination, dry or dull skin, and anyone who wants an hour to switch off.
- Think twice if: your skin is inflamed or broken; you have eczema, dermatitis or rosacea; you are using prescription acne treatment or retinoids; you have had a peel or laser treatment recently; you are pregnant — check with your doctor first.
Common types of facial
- Deep-cleansing / extraction: focuses on clearing blackheads and congested pores. In Vietnam this step is called lấy nhân mụn and is a standard part of many facials.
- Hydrating / calming: for dry, sun-stressed or sensitive skin.
- Brightening: masks and serums that help skin look more even.
- Relaxing facial: gentle products and a longer massage.
Ongoing problems such as cystic acne, pigmentation or scarring are better assessed by a dermatologist.
What happens at the salon
- Consultation and skin check: the therapist asks about your skin type, the products you use and any allergies.
- Make-up removal and cleanse.
- Exfoliation: a fine scrub, enzyme or mild acid.
- Steam: softens the skin before extractions, if you are having them.
- Extractions: should only be done with clean tools and gloved hands. You can ask for a lighter touch or skip this step entirely.
- Face, neck and shoulder massage.
- Mask chosen for your skin type.
- Finish: toner, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen if you are heading outside.
Before your appointment
- Tell the spa if you use retinoids, acne medication or AHA/BHA products, or if you have had a peel or laser treatment recently.
- Avoid exfoliating, shaving or waxing your face for a day or two beforehand.
- Arrive bare-faced if you can.
- Don't book a facial right before a big event; skin can look a little pink for a few hours after extractions.
Aftercare
- Skip make-up for the rest of the day if you can.
- Wear sunscreen daily and cover up outdoors. The sun in Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang can be intense, and freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to it.
- Avoid scrubs and strong actives for a few days.
- Don't squeeze spots at home.
- Drink water and use a light moisturiser.
Visitor tip: if you want a facial during a beach holiday, book it towards the end of your stay or on a day you plan to be indoors, rather than right before a long day in the sun.
Questions to ask the salon
- Is this treatment right for my skin type, and what steps does it include?
- Which products do you use, and is there anything I should avoid?
- How are extraction tools cleaned and sterilised?
- Will you recommend products or packages? You are never obliged to buy anything.
FAQ
How often should I get a facial?
Many people go every 4–6 weeks. Oily or congested skin may benefit from more frequent visits on the therapist's advice, but extractions shouldn't be done too often.
Is a facial good for acne?
A facial can clean pores and reduce congestion, but it is not an acne treatment. Inflamed or cystic acne that won't settle is a job for a dermatologist.
Will my skin be red after a facial?
It may look slightly pink for a few hours, especially after extractions. If redness, burning, swelling or a rash lasts longer, contact the spa and see a doctor.
How much is a facial in Da Nang?
Prices depend on the spa, the length of the treatment and the products used. See current prices at salons on Chepom Bookings: Da Nang · Hoi An · Ho Chi Minh City
Can I go in the sun after a facial?
Yes, but protect your skin well with sunscreen, a hat and shade, especially after exfoliation or extractions. Many people prefer a quieter, indoor day afterwards.
Can I get a facial while pregnant?
Many gentle facials may still be suitable, but some active ingredients are best avoided. Check with your doctor first and tell the spa when you book.
