Waxing: hard vs strip wax, how to prepare and aftercare

Waxing removes hair from the root: a layer of wax is spread on the skin, grips the hairs and is pulled off quickly, leaving skin smooth for weeks rather than days. It works well on legs, arms, underarms, the bikini area, face and back. Skip it on sunburnt or broken skin, or while using retinoids or certain acne medication.

Hard wax vs strip wax

• Hard wax: applied warm, left to set, then lifted off without a strip. It grips the hair more than the skin, so it's usually gentler on underarms, the bikini area and face.
• Strip (soft) wax: spread thinly, covered with a cloth or paper strip and pulled off quickly. Fast and well suited to large areas like legs and arms.

Waxing is not the same as laser or IPL hair removal (triệt lông in Vietnamese), which is a course of sessions aimed at long-term reduction and is usually done at a clinic with specialist equipment.

What happens at the salon

1. Health check: the therapist asks about medication, skincare and sensitivity.
2. Skin cleansed, sometimes with a light dusting of powder so the wax grips the hair.
3. Temperature test on a small patch.
4. Wax applied in the direction of hair growth and removed quickly against it, while the skin is held taut.
5. Tidy-up of stray hairs with tweezers.
6. Soothing oil or gel to lift residue and calm the skin.

A good therapist uses a fresh spatula every time they dip into the wax and never double-dips.

Before your appointment

• Let hair grow to about 0.5 cm, which is usually 2–3 weeks after your last shave.
• Exfoliate gently a day or two before, not on the day.
• Skip lotion and oil on the area on the day.
• Avoid sunbathing beforehand, and don't wax sunburnt skin.
• Many people find their skin more sensitive around their period, so you may prefer to book another week.

Aftercare

• For 24–48 hours: avoid sunbathing, the sea, pools, saunas, very hot showers and sweaty workouts.
• Wear loose, breathable clothing, especially after a bikini wax.
• Avoid fragranced or alcohol-based products on the area.
• After a few days, exfoliate gently two or three times a week to help prevent ingrown hairs.
• Some redness for a few hours is normal. If you notice swelling, pus or lasting pain, see a doctor.
